Media Musings: the movie "Stepmom"

There’s a scene in Stepmom that has stayed with me for nearly two decades. I discovered this movie right after my dad passed away in April 2003. Watching it hit me hard—it became an avenue to process my grief, to feel the weight of loss, and to find hope for that empty physical space he left behind. It reminded me that love endures, even when someone is gone, and that we carry on the memory and legacy of those we’ve lost.

In this scene, Jackie (Susan Sarandon) and Isabel (Julia Roberts) sit across from each other, discussing love, family, and the passage of time:
Isabel: “You know, I never wanted to be a mom… looking over my shoulder for the next twenty years, knowing someone else would have done it better… someone else would have done it right.”
Jackie: “What do you have that I don't?”
Isabel: “You're Mother Earth, incarnate… you know every story, every wound, every memory. Their whole life's happiness is wrapped up in you… every single second.”
Jackie: “The thing is, they don’t have to choose. They can have us both. I have their past, you can have their future.”
Jackie’s words are heartbreaking and beautiful. She’s preparing Isabel and the children for a future she may not live to see, creating space for love and life to continue even in her absence. It’s a quiet, powerful reminder that letting go isn’t giving up—it’s about honoring what was, while making room for what comes next.

For me, this scene became more than a line in a movie. It was a mirror for grief, a reminder that love survives absence, and that memories and legacies shape the future in ways we can’t always see. Life moves forward, even in the shadow of loss, and acceptance can be its own kind of grace.
