The New Me

Well Hot baby!  Since September 1, 2005, I have lost total of 18.3 lbs. I am very excited about that because for the first time in a long time I am able to get on a weight scale and have it shows me how much I weight rather than have it flash warning sign that I am overloading its brain.  It is a miracle of modern days, what you all know about that?  However I must paint a bigger picture of my overall health so you know where I stand in this short life of mine.

When I turned 30 years old, I decided it was time to do something about my health and all that hoohah.  So I went to a brand new doctor because I haven’t really had a regular doctor since I entered Gallaudet University in 1998.  My doctor is really nice and cool. When he came in the room, the look on his face was pretty priceless. I don’t think he anticipated that there would be a HUGE man sitting right there in the room with a big smile on his face.  We had a brief introduction and then he said “So what brings you here today?”  I told him “I want to lose weight and completely change my life, but I need a benchmark. I honestly don’t have a benchmark to work from. It has been so long since I have gotten on a weight scale. I haven’t had blood work done in a long time.”  One big red flag was raised…my blood pressure readout was HIGH. The doctor said “I am very worried about your blood pressure, it is very high!”

The doctor scheduled blood work and one week of blood pressure monitoring. I was told that if I felt weird or got a headache that I was to go to the emergency room immediately. So that scared me a lot.  I came back to see the doctor a week later. He started me on blood pressure medication, and uh oh. I have mild diabetes as well. However, another priceless look on his face was when he told me my cholesterol numbers were good for a guy my size. It was only 215, but he said the ratio of LDL (bad cholesterol) and HDL (good cholesterol) wasn’t so good but it is easy to change.

So in this whirlwind of medical crisis, I got scheduled for another blood test that tested for glucose in protein of the blood cell. It turned out that the result showed that I have very very very very mild diabetes so I am glad that I caught it early.

The biggest and the best thing about this whole thing is that in 7 weeks, I lost 18.3 lbs. That is incredible for me.   How did I do that? I had two hour appointments with a dietician and I also went to diabetes management classes. I also did a few things, I planned my meals, I watched my calories and I began to exercise more than I usually do in the past.

This whole thing is about taking ownership of my own life, no longer am I allowing food to control me. I am controlling the food. Now I eat because I am hungry and because I need fuel to be active, and need protein to repair my body.  Life has changed. It seems too good to be true right at this moment. I have to tell you all this:  once I made that determination that I will grab the reins and actually start taking care of myself. Everything fell in place and things are going the way I want.

To conclude this fabulous post, I want to mention that I don’t have to see my doctor for 3 more months, so from a week ago today to the day I see my doctor, it is 12 weeks, so I decided that I will lose 25 lbs.  As of last Tuesday, I went to weight myself, I got a big shock of my life, I lost 6 lbs, which brought the total to 18.3 lbs. So I only have 19 more lbs to lose from now to January 9th.  I know I will make it.  I am excited.
